The Gnostic Force

Welcome to My Gnostic / Force Homepage

This website will hopefully become a place where we can share our thoughts on the deeper issues of life and where we can hopefully guide each other through this quest that is life.

I apologize for the popups. Perils of free web hosting. Please do not let Gator on your computer because it will do you no good.

The Force - As I Have Come To See It

My theory in a nutshell on 'the force' is that the universe according to the big bang had to come from SOMEthing. That something could be called 'the force'. Since the big bang, the force surrounds and penetrates all things (I differ from official star wars belief because my force penetrates even non 'living' things).

Now there are orderly sides and chaotic sides to life, and we see this in everything from weather to people to chemistry to physics to planetary alignments, and black holes and supernovas.

By orderly, I mean those 'good' things we feel. Things such as love, which makes us as couples want to build a future together with home and family. Or as a society (where we love, to varying degrees, our neighbors) where we build communities and nations, to say, the conditions on this planet being just right for life at this time to occur.

Chaotic things are things like storms, forest fires, black holes, supernovas, etc. They seem 'terrible' to us, and yet often times the result of such things is new order.

In the same way as a storm may shatter a community, the community comes
together afterward to rebuild.

So one could say that the two forces, order, and chaos, feed each other, much in the concept of In/Yo (Yin/Yang). We fear the chaos, and are apprehensive of it, yet when we rebuild after the storm, we look to the opportunities for order.

Order on it's own, is not necessarily ideal either. When we have any situation that is totally controlled, freedom suffers, expression suffers, and as a result, the seeds of disharmony are sown. In the bible we are told that in the beginning all was right in heaven, yet Lucifer saw need to rebel. And yet we are told he was a high angel, mighty and wise, and the most beautiful. Satanists hold the belief that Lucifer is the Light Bringer, bringing to light knowledge that was surpressed.

And yet, freedom taken to extreme is total anarchy. This would probably be a good idea of 'hell'. Just because one enjoys a steak from time to time does not mean one wants an entire cow stuffed down their throat. Loud music is fun unless you're weary and trying to sleep. Janice Joplin sang that freedom was just another word for nothing left to lose. In anarchy, nothing would remain of those pleasures, as they would be swept away for new pleasures. Humans, being creatures of habit, would suffer for this.

So therefore we seek the middle ground, with freedom, tempered by control, in all things.
You could call this 'force' "god" if you wanted to. I dont think this is how the Abrahamic faiths perceive him, but this is how I perceive him.

Gnostic teachings tell us the universe was brought forth from this god-force, and is therefore a part of him. In turn, we are all of us, part of this universe, and therefore a touch of the divine is within all of us. It is for this reason that I cannot believe that Yehoshua ben Joseph (Jesus Christ) is any more the son of god than I or anyone else is.

I look at the Yehoshua of history, who we know seems to certainly have lived indeed, as a man who was light years ahead of his time. If we can believe some of the less fanciful stuff of the bible, he held women in equal station as men, for example, compared to our world today where women are still treated as objects by many people (look at the middle east. I'm not knocking that culture especially though, being of Lebanese descent myself).

He also had good ideas towards communal living for the good of the people as a whole. I tend to believe he was a 'pure' communist as far as socio-political ambitions go, which, if you can pull it off, would be a damn fine system. With a theocratic people such as the Hebrew people of the day were, As Priest/King, Yehoshua was in a position of power to make this idea work.

I firmly believe there is alot of wisdom in the sayings attributed to Yehoshua. Sadly though, his own words probably account for less than 5% of the bible, whereas the writings of Paul/Saul easily account for about 60%. It is this incongruity, I think, that is the catalyst for many people looking for answers beyond 'traditional' christianity.

Afterthoughts

The above work was composed by myself over the last few years. I will confess that the events of September 11th caused some of the insights into the rebuilding after chaos, but as I said, you can see many other examples of this in man and nature, and I was aware of the phenomenon long before.

If these thoughts help you in any way, please feel free to save them, share, them, or even alter them if you like, though I'd appreciate seeing any of your changes sent to me via email.

The Wharf at Alma NB - August 2002
This is a scene from Alma NB, Canada, home of some of the highest tides in the world. As the sea floods everything and washes bits of the coast away, so also it falls back, and daily you can walk on the ocean floor which is normally under 20 feet of water. You can get an idea of the life that exists where we would never suspect it, and that even in the seeming chaos there is order.
